Fitting a Hayman Reese #2919RW towbar to a Mazda CX5

Today we fitted a Hayman Reese towbar to a Mazda CX5 wagon. This bar fits the Sreis 1 CX5s built from 2012 until Feb 2017.

Rating 1800kg max trailer, 180kg max ball weight.
The Hayman Reese tow bar for this fitting is a Class 4 hitch making it a heavy duty unit with a 50mm square receiver socket for the tow ball mount. The bar is mostly hidden behind the bumper. This bar is a neat fit with a discreet bumper cut. A 1400kg class-3 towbar is also available for this vehicle #02922RLW.
The Kit:
Towbar #2919RW, trailer socket #4816, ECU #4826
The Hayman Reese kit comes with a vehicle specific wiring loom, tow ball mount, ball and rated shackles. The additional parts required are a tail piece which attaches a trailer socket to the vehicle specific loom and #4826 electronic control unit. We would typically install a Hayman Reese #4816 tail, which is a 7-pin flat socket with an appropriate length of cable to complete the hook up.
Fitting:
Physically bolting the bar to the CX5 is relatively straight forward as the tow bar uses existing vehicle mounting points on the lower edge of the impact beam and captured nuts within the chassis rails. Access does however require the removal of the rear bumper and the mufflers to be dropped.
Electrics:
The electrical hook up is a straight forward vehicle specific plug that simply attaches inline to the exisitng vehicle lighting loom. The power supply to towing harness is provided from the vehicle fuse box which means routing the power wire along the side of the vehicle through the door kick plates to the fuse panel to the front passenger foot well.
Bumper cut:
A bumper cut is required for this vehicle. Details are given in the instructions but care does need to be taken because bumper designs can be modified over time and change across the vehicles range. On the CX5 the bumper is usually on the underside face of the bumper and therefore very discrete.
Additional:
This job could be done by the competent DIY mechanic who takes appropriate caution when removing, refitting and cutting the bumper. Issues to watch for are carefully marking and checking for the bumper cut before actually cutting. Treat the instruction measurements as a guide only and offer the bumper to the vehicle to confirm before cutting.
